Upper Elementary Program

By the time the students arrive in Upper Elementary, they are prepared to research, write, and present orally. Reading is used as a tool and writing is the means of communicating individual thought and creativity. Math and science is taken to a more advanced level while History is studied and applied to today’s current events.

Upper Elementary Students travel to The Outdoor School at Camp Champions each year to further develop independence, peer cohesion, and nature/science skills. Team building activities strengthen the individual and group. Students spend two nights and three days at this wonderful camp outside of Marble Falls.

Fourth graders study Texas government and travel to Austin to view firsthand the way our government and government officials conduct the business of Texas. All students learn debate strategies and techniques for stating opinions, asserting views, and making persuasive arguments.

Fifth graders research issues of an assigned country as they prepare to be delegates at the Montessori Model United Nations in New York City during the spring. This four day conference is great preparation for life in the 21st century when such issues as “water availability and sustainability” and “nuclear proliferation and the country’s Montessori Model United Nationsposition” must be discussed and solved.

The San Antonio Country Day School is proud to offer 6th grade beginning fall 2008. Students will continue to advance their reading, math, science, history, language, writing, geography, music, and art skills. Texas history and a refresher course in Texas government will precede the study of the federal government. Part of the Math Curriculum will surround issues concerning money which will lay a foundation for healthy savers, spenders, and investors.

The students will travel in the spring of the year to Washington D.C., Boston, or Philadelphia to visit the origins of our nation’s history. Understanding the way our executive, legislative, and justice systems were developed and how they work will lay a concrete foundation for studies to come later.
