Montessori Programs

Pre-Primary Program

The San Antonio Country Day School accepts students as young as 2 ½ years. When children are prepared to come to school, i.e. ready to separate from parents, be redirected, and attend to a task, these young students increase language, motor, social, and practical life skills.

Practical Life activities, the foundation of the Montessori Method, promote confidence, concentration, order, independence, and creativity. Children receive lessons in care of self, care of the environment, and grace and courtesy. Not only do the “life skills” help students manage their needs, they help students learn to organize, and order their environment and work.

Sensorial materials, designed by Maria Montessori, are presented to help students educate their senses. These materials offer the opportunity for exploration and practice as they learn to discriminate shapes, dimensions, colors, sounds, textures, tastes, and scents. When students incorporate their senses into their learning, a stronger memory of the work is made.

Preparation for math, reading, and writing begins at the Pre-primary level as students lay the foundation for what is to come. Music and art skills also begin to emerge.
